Forty Four 03:27

I'm finding that the older I get, the less concerned I am about trying to make an impression. When I was younger, I would tie myself in knots trying to be something, and someone, that people would like. The problem with doing that is that very soon you lose your own identity, and people never really get to know who you are.

As a musician and songwriter, I felt very much like I'd created a character that gave me the confidence to do what I was doing. Most writers and performers do that, but I felt like that character was becoming a caricature. I wasn't comfortable in that mask anymore.

Over the past couple of releases, I've been experimenting with sounds and styles that are outside my comfort zone. I've been introducing more electronic and synthetic elements to my palette.

I've also tried writing more "poppy" songs. I've always been dismissive toward pop, or overly commercial music. I am. I admit, a terrible music snob; and I've felt that pop music is somehow beneath me. With this album especially, I was experimenting with the the form and trying to see if I'm actually capable of writing commercial music.

It turns out I'm not. This has given me a new found respect for pop writers, and a desire to create noise again. If you've missed the noise, the next release should be more to your liking. For the time being, I hope you enjoy this album; it's different, but it's still me.

I sometimes feel like I'm too old to be still doing this; but I also worry about how old I'd be if I didn't.

Until next time

Your friend,
