about

My second solo album.

I started writing these songs straight after the first album was released. I knew I didn't want the second album to be 'Bent Promises Part 2', but I wasn't entirely sure what I wanted it to be. The title, and the concept, comes from something I was thinking about after the release of the first album. Pretty much nobody seemed to be listening to my stuff, so I decided to just write whatever the hell I felt like writing. After all, if nobody's listening, why worry about what anything sounds like, right?

So, I set about work on a bunch of new songs. I think the album is a mixed bag of styles. I wasn't worrying about continuity or cohesion, I was simply enjoying making music. I had some feedback from someone who said that they really liked 'Little White Lie', but nothing else on the album sounded like it. They meant it as a criticism, but I took it as a compliment.

There's some guitar work on this album that I'm really proud of. I'd been listening to my old Captain Beefheart LPs, and it inspired me to really push myself with my own playing. I was trying to think outside the box and not go for the 'strum-strum-strum' approach. There's also a little of my latest love: the ukulele. I got my first uke because I wanted an instrument that I could take anywhere, but it adds its own unique quality to songs, so it has become a firm favourite of mine. 'Hook, Line & Sinker' has ukulele all over it.

Until next time
Simon

about

Shackled Mule Halifax, UK

Thanks for stopping by. I'm Simon and I have a knack for writing songs that nobody likes. I've covered a lot of bases over the years but I'm currently making miserable folk music for miserable folk.

My recordings are available for whatever you can afford and all profits go directly to my caffeine fund.
